Artist Statement: Art is a meditation and a prayer, from adorning our cathedrals to decorating the halls of society, it inspires us. The Germans have a word for it: Einfuhlung, the ability to engage emotively with the world. Art beseeches us to ponder the wonder of life by reflecting a glimpse of its beauty and mystery. The world welcomes us through our senses, particularly through our sight. The ripeness of the reddest strawberry beckons to us before we reach for it; the dark purple horizon warns us of the storm coming just as the cerulean sky calls to us to come out and play. We feel happier when surrounded by bright colors, calmer when surrounded by cool ones. Nature relates to us through colors. We know when the sky is angry and the sea is calm because we see it and we feel it. In my work, I try to capture a reflection of the colors and movements of our world as a homage to nature’s magnificence, and as a reminder that life is an outrageously gorgeous, exciting, and generous gift.
